Do-it-yourself construction of wooden houses

As experience shows, the largest number of questions when building a wooden house with your own hands arises at the stage of choosing the design of load-bearing walls, which is why we will start an article about materials suitable for individual construction with them.

Firstly, the walls of the future house must meet the basic requirements: have sufficient bearing capacity and not change their strength throughout the life of the building, have sufficient thermal insulation properties, guarantee protection from adverse weather conditions and provide a good level of comfort inside residential premises. Consider the most popular options for wall building materials:

log cabin

rounded log

bar

frame

The construction of the walls of the log house consists of logs laid in horizontal rows, not spared from the main top layer. Such logs have a conical shape, so they need to be carefully selected for each other. Proponents of this construction technology argue that it is the top layer of wood that is the most important and when cleaning the log from it, many of the positive aspects of this material are lost. You can talk endlessly about the advantages of using wood to build a house. Wood is a natural and environmentally friendly material, it is able to renew and purify indoor air and change its humidity. The only significant disadvantages of wooden structures are considered to be exposure to the environment, insects and significant shrinkage. The latter, not for the better, affects the timing of the construction of the house. In other matters, other variations in the use of wood are deprived of many shortcomings, we will consider them below.

rounded log

Modern industry has made it possible to speed up and simplify the construction process – first of all, this affected the shape of the source material. Thus, a factory-processed log, which has an ideally smooth and even shape, was called a rounded log. This material looks good, shrinks less, but retains heat less well and can lose its pleasant appearance without serious care.

bar

The technology of building a house from a bar is practically no different from assembling a classic log house, however, due to a more regular shape, the time of work is reduced and shrinkage is reduced.

In addition to the usual beam, there is a profiled beam – having the shape of a certain profile and glued – consisting of several lamellas glued together. The first option further simplifies the assembly of the house, and the latter is also spared from a serious lack of wood – glued laminated timber practically does not shrink. Their disadvantages include high cost, which can be 3-4 times more than the price of a conventional timber.

frame

Frame walls are the most economical in terms of consumption of materials, funds, time and labor. The essence of the technology is so simple that it is not uncommon for people to build small houses alone. Only the skeleton of the house is assembled from wood here, while due to the vertical arrangement of the boards, it is not subject to shrinkage. The cavities between the racks of the frame are filled with heat and sound insulating mats or other insulation and sewn up on both sides with any suitable material.

So what to build a wooden house from?? It is impossible to give a definite answer to this question. The choice of material depends on your financial capabilities, the planned use of the house, its size, the geographical location of the building and many other factors. The ideal design that suits everyone has not yet been invented, it remains to choose the one that meets your requirements and meets your beliefs.
