Facing the house: options

Cladding material in the exterior of your house is used for different purposes. For many, this is only a decorative component, but this building element is also used to protect the outer walls of the house. Cladding or applying various kinds of siding to the walls of the house adds the desired appearance to the structure, but at the same time protects the building from water, wind and other influences. Therefore, the choice of a homeowner should be focused not only on beauty, but also on functionality.

Mounting is important.

Siding looks like a simple panel, but it can’t just be glued to an exterior wall like wallpaper. First, a suitable frame is created to support the cladding material – different fasteners are used for different materials. As a rule, contractors install wooden or metal beams and pegs in the frame of the house, on which the siding is then fixed. Other builders may suggest that you build the shell of the house with concrete, brick, or other materials rather than frame materials. Then this shell is sheathed with plywood and treated with insulation, and facing materials are fixed on top of this, which further strengthen the structure and increase its energy efficiency.

Siding

The most common cladding material is siding. These are long horizontal planks that look like boards. Although they are made from different materials, the most popular are metal and plastic (metal siding and vinyl siding). Thin horizontal strips of siding can also be made from wood or composite materials. Solid color siding will cost you the least, but you can also find siding with stone or wood texture and other patterns on the market that will make your home look like it was made of expensive materials. Some manufacturers produce siding made from fiber cement. Specialized siding can also be presented with vertical stripes or panels with different designs.

Facing brick or stone

Brick cladding is an equally popular option. Facing brick allows you to achieve a versatile and beautiful appearance. Even pretty wooden buildings are often covered in brick to enhance the look and strength of the structure. A similar option is stone cladding.

Plaster and other application systems

Some exterior cladding materials are simply applied directly to the exterior of the home. One example of such a material is plaster, which can be used to achieve a beautiful textured effect. There are more advanced exterior finishing materials that are applied in a similar way, but they are more functional. For example, finishing systems with insulation, which help to strengthen the structure of the house in areas where there are frequent hurricanes or storms.

panel cladding

Most commercial properties receive paneling, due to the rather large size of the building and the difficulty of processing it with piece siding or plaster. Decorative panels are also used in ordinary residential country houses. Panels allow builders to cover the surface of a home faster and with fewer joints (giving less room for water or air to seep in). Cladding panels can be made of cement, steel or other materials, depending on the application. Commercial buildings are most often sheathed with metal cladding panels.
