Kitchen apron: choice of material and design

Kitchen apron: choice of material and design

An apron for the kitchen is the same work surface, the wall behind the stove, which is exposed to the most pollution. But it is also an expressive design accent, the most spectacular and bright, perhaps the most significant in the entire kitchen design. So which apron to choose for the kitchen? Much depends on the overall design of the interior. After all, there are many materials suitable for wall cladding – from sheet plastic to wooden lining, from natural or artificial stone to steel panels, from author’s mosaics to skinali and fabrics behind glass.

Features of the choice of material

Before deciding which apron for the kitchen is better, you should get acquainted with the main features of common materials. So, among them:

The surface of ceramic tiles is considered the most common. The use of ceramics is considered the most logical option and the first one that comes to mind. Given the number of different designer collections and the strength of such a material, this is not surprising. A ceramic apron may well be colorful or monochrome – it all depends on the chosen collection. There are also tiles with an original texture and an unusual shape, including a wild boar. You can also experiment with the arrangement of tiles on the wall – for example, instead of the standard linear one, choose an unusual diagonal one.

Plastic apron is most often found in modern kitchens. Not narrow stripes look very interesting, but large sheets with images that occupy the entire free area between the upper drawers and the lower tabletops. This solution is good because the plastic can be easily washed, it has no texture, which means that the surface will remain clean longer. In addition, it is completely resistant to moisture. However, the selection of material must be approached very carefully, since plastic from an unknown manufacturer without quality certificates can turn yellow very quickly.

A glass apron or skinali is also a common solution for designer kitchens. This finish option is made of tempered glass and is distinguished by a variety of decor methods. So, a pattern can be applied to glass by sandblasting or artistic “stained glass” painting. Often an unusual pattern is placed on the wall – on fabric or on paper, and covered with glass.

Mosaic, natural or artificial stone. The design of the kitchen apron in this case will be both unusual and luxurious. Despite the fact that there are tiles imitating a mosaic, only a real mosaic can look so impressive and luxurious. As for the stone, it is used in the form of ready-made seamless even slabs. Depending on the surrounding decor, you can choose light colors of marble or dark colors of granite. The range of colors of artificial stone provides even more scope for choice.

MDF. Laminated boards are often used to decorate the facades of the headset. They are also suitable for decorating the work area. Often such materials are decorated with “three-dimensional” drawings. The only drawback is the lack of moisture resistance of such an apron. In addition, the pattern may be damaged by frequent washing. This option is good for those who do not want to spend a lot of money on decor, as they appreciate frequent changes in space. But it is the replacement of the apron that allows you to radically change the interior of the entire kitchen.

There is one more nuance that helps to understand how to choose an apron for the kitchen. This is the color scheme. Usually, the apron is made accent, and textiles and kitchen utensils are already selected under it, so that in general the room looks harmonious.
